Dugi Otok
Dugi Otok island is the largest of the Zadar archipelago islands with almost 150 km of fascinating contrast—lush natural parks, secluded sandy beaches, and steep cliffs offering magnificent views to enjoy. Most tourists come for the day via ferries from Zadar to the southwestern and westerly parts of the island. Telescica, in the southwest, is a nature reserve that is part of Kornati National Park, which also has the largest natural harbor of all the Adriatic islands.. Going west to Bozava, you’ll find Sakarum, a great sandy beach with a picturesque Veli Rat lighthouse. Sali, where most of the ferries arrive, is a tourist and fishing town and is the island’s main town. There are only 1500 year-round residents here, but they are scattered in almost a dozen different settlements. Since there is only one main road connecting everything, it’s great to rent a scooter or a bike to enjoy the terrific views and scenery. And if you think donkeys are slow and stupid, then be sure to catch Sali’s summer festival “Saljske užance”, and watch the fastest donkeys in town race to the finish–a Dugi Otok island tradition!
