Zadar
Zadar, the place where Maraschino cherry liqueur comes from, is quite the happening place– it was even the site of the World Darts Championship a few years back It’s Croatia’s fifth largest city, with 75,000 people, but only half as many who live in Rijecka, Croatia’s third largest. Despite its small size, it has its own busy little airport (Ryan Air has a full-time year-round presence here) with direct connections to lot of European cities and excellent bus connections too. No wonder Zadar is becoming very popular even in the off-season. A big reason is where this city is located—smack in the very middle of the Adriatic coast surrounded by four National Parks, Paklenica mountain, the fabulous Krka waterfalls, the largest natural lake in Croatia –Lake Vrana and amazing offshore islands that offer vastly different experiences than those like in Dalmatia… Another is its rich heritage—the old town is located on its own peninsula and its most famous symbol is the 9th century St. Donatus’ Church. But there is so much more: the Romanesque St. Grisigono’s Church is from the 12th century and St. Mary’s bell tower from the year 1105; still-standing fortification walls from the 16th century and even a 1st century Roman forum! And then there’s Nikola Bašić. He is the iconic designer of the city’s world-famous art installations, .the Sea Organ (which uses the changing tides to make ethereal sound) and Greeting to the Sun (which takes Zadar’s famous sunsets and filters them through glass panels for a dazzling effect). These surreal installations attract thousands to the waterfront—when you are there, be sure to take one of the Rowboat Taxis from the Liburnian coast to the jetty at “Maraska”, i.e. Diga as it is known in Zadar. The trip takes less than two minutes. Zadar has it all—bike, hike, sail, climb, dive, raft, see, listen!
