Umag
Umag is pretty little town sitting at the top of Istria’s eastern coastline, just 50 nautical miles from Venice! The town itself is surrounded by a beautiful bay with world-class marinas and a bevy of internationally recognized “Blue Flag” beaches (a coveted award given for exceptionally clean and safe beaches). The protected bay creates a May to October swimming season here. Umag has a surprising number of better quality hotels, excellent campsites and of course a ton of apartments for rent. Add the great local cuisine, wine and olive oil roads and the town’s growing reputation as an international ATP tennis tournament site and no wonder it has become so popular. Umag’s beauty wasn’t just discovered. The Roman elite summered here 1,500 years ago. And the town hasn’t forgotten its past–parts of the old town walls and towers, Renaissance and Baroque houses and churches have been well-preserved. It’s easy to see why Istria and its east coast from Rovinj and Porec up through Novigrad and Umag are the now competing with the Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik in Dalmatia. as must places to tour while in Croatia.
